Abstract

Abstract Online learning has become a trend as the result of the rapid growth of integrating technology in education, especially in the ELT classroom. A number of online learning platforms have been developed to support a blended learning format such as Google classroom, Edmodo, Schoology, etc. In practice, many challenges appear in applying the online discussion either utilizing the tools or engaging the students in the discussion and so on. However, in a language learning environment, it is surprising to know that the discussion within asynchronous environment gained great participation from the students rather than face-to-face class discussion. The current study focused to investigate the students’ perception of participating in classroom discussion carried out within Google classroom platform. The students’ preference for online discussion vs classroom discussion was also considered. A descriptive qualitative were used to obtain the data from 5 students of Introduction to Linguistics course in IAIN Madura. The students were selected as they mostly engaged in discussion within Google platform and had little participation in classroom discussion. The findings indicated certain benefits of participating in asynchronous discussion, the students’ preference, and some problems that may appear. Furthermore, the potential suggestion are also presented in this study. Keyword: Asynchronous online discussion, blended learning, Google classroom
