Abstract

Nowdays, hijrah has been deemed as the widely accepted notion in urban society. The number of public figures who decided to undergo hijrah became one of the drivers of the increasing number of hijrah in the society. This study aims to describe the concept of hijrah among millennials, as well as to describe their reference sources about the concept of hijrah. Millennials, both as active media users, as well as people who are looking for their own identities. The present study was participated by the third-year university students in an Islamic State University based on East Java, Indonesia. In addition, the study employed a case study design. Data were garnered through interviews, observations and documentations. The results of the study conclude that some millennials understand that hijrah is not only understood as the use of religious symbols, such as wearing a long veil, niqob, and socks for the women or wearing sirwal trousers and having the beard for the men, nor is hijrah understood as a change of place, as exemplified by the Prophet, like moving from Mecca to Medina. In essence, hijrah has a broad meaning, hijrah can include changes in mindset and behavior from previously far from religious values to patterns of thought and behavior that are closer to religious values. The difference in perception among millennials is caused by the source of the information they get. Some of them get their ‘hijrah concept’ source of information from religious reference books, cleric lectures on social media and studies on campus that they regularly participate in. Key words: Hijrah, millennials, da'wah, social media
